Frequently Asked Questions

What makes a password secure?

A secure password typically has these characteristics:

    • Length: Longer passwords are generally more secure (12+ characters recommended)

    • Complexity: A mix of uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and special characters

    • Unpredictability: Avoiding common words, phrases, or patterns

    • Uniqueness: Different from passwords used on other sites

This generator creates passwords that meet these criteria while remaining customizable to your specific requirements.

What's the difference between a password and a passphrase?

A password is typically a single string of characters that can include letters, numbers, and symbols (e.g., "P@s5w0rd!2023"). A passphrase consists of multiple words combined together (e.g., "correct-horse-battery-staple").

Passphrases are often easier to remember while still providing strong security due to their length. The security comes from the total length rather than the complexity of individual characters.

Why exclude similar or ambiguous characters?

Similar characters like 'i', 'l', '1', 'o', and '0' can be visually confusing, especially in certain fonts. Excluding these makes passwords easier to read and type correctly.

Ambiguous characters like brackets, slashes, and quotes can sometimes cause problems in different contexts (such as command-line interfaces or when used in code). They may also require special handling when typed, especially on different keyboard layouts.

If you don't need to read or type your password manually (e.g., if you're using a password manager), then including these characters can add to the complexity of your password.

How secure is this password generator?

This generator uses your browser's random number generation capabilities to create unpredictable passwords. The security of the generated passwords depends on:

    • The length and complexity options you choose

    • The randomness of your browser's random number generator

    • How you store and use the password afterward

For maximum security, we recommend using longer passwords (16+ characters) or passphrases with multiple words, and using a different password for each website or service.

Is my password data safe when using this tool?

Yes, this tool processes everything locally in your browser. Your passwords and settings:

    • Are never sent to any server

    • Are not stored or saved in any way

    • Are completely cleared when you close or refresh the page

This is part of our "privacy-first" approach across all DevCompanion tools. Your data never leaves your device.
